We Keep You Informed
When the parents do not agree on a child custody arrangement, resolving the custody disputes in court can be time-consuming, acrimonious and costly. Our goal is to help you navigate the process smoothly, to avoid litigation when we can and to work with the other parent, when possible, to develop a plan that is right for you and your children.
Under California law, there are two types of child custody:
- Legal custody refers to the right to make decisions about how to raise the child, including decisions about education, health care and religious training.
- Physical Custody refers to the right to make decisions about the routine day-to-day activities of the child and where the child lives.
Depending on several factors, parents may share custody, which is often called “joint” physical and/or legal custody. Or, one of them may have sole physical and/or legal custody and establish an agreement with the other parent regarding visitation and parenting time.
In addition to helping you pursue a custody arrangement in the child’s best interests, we also handle issues involving child support, paternity, post-judgment modification and other issues that may involve you and your family.
